In 2011, MJ Carlson created a brand that spoke to her love for design, business, and the transformative power of storytelling. Electric Picks was founded on the acknowledgment of jewelry’s capacity for holding love, memories, and experiences—some of which span generations.
For Giving Tuesday, Electric Picks is uniting with global maternal health organization Mama Glow in their love for honoring the galvanizing nature of a story. Inspired by a deep devotion to improving maternal health conditions, the Mama Glow and Electric Picks collaboration centers those on the perinatal journey.
The current state of our maternal health landscape calls for it. The United States is in the throes of a worsening maternal health crisis, and while all birthing people remain at-risk, the crisis reflects stark racial disparities. When compared to their white counterparts, Black birthing people are two to three times more likely to die of pregnancy and childbirth-related complications. Unfortunately, this figure is only a baseline. In our nation’s hardest-hit regions, Black birthing people are eight to nine times more likely to die of pregnancy and childbirth-related complications.
The Luminous Necklace, which launches on Tuesday, November 28th, represents the global commitment to creating a safe, dignified birthing experience for all. The simple design, which includes a crescent moon, encapsulates various themes underlying the liberatory vision for women and birthing people. Among the representations is the message of transition and change, which aptly describes the pregnancy and birthing experience. Historically, the crescent moon represents female deities and feminine energy, and has been linked to goddesses representing fertility, intuition, and the divine feminine as a result. The themes of protection, blessings, mystery, magic, love, and romance all join to add additional dimensions to its symbolism.
A growing body of research speaks to the role of doulas in improving outcomes. On Giving Tuesday, both Electric Picks and Mama Glow are working together to honor these findings by contributing to efforts to support the growing workforce. 100% of the proceeds go to support the Mama Glow Doula Training Program, helping to advance health equity and forge career paths for doulas and care workers.

Founded in 2011 by MJ Carlson and now run with her Best Friend Chantel Gia, the brand was born of the idea that jewelry holds our stories, and lives our experiences with us. Each piece is curated with thought, crafted with love, and destined to live your best adventures with you.
It started with a dream —namely, a dream about stringing [vintage] guitar picks onto a bracelet. MJ woke up and promptly set out to replicate the design. And as all modern creative endeavors do, this involved consulting YouTube videos and enlisting the help of her best friend Chantel. Encouraged by family and friends, the self-taught duo were soon filling orders for their vintage-inspired styles — and a brand was born.
