Governor Cuomo just issued an executive order requiring all hospitals in NY, both public and private, to allow women to birth with the support of their partners. All hospitals will need to comply with the latest health guidance by the NY DOH. This past week NY Presbyterian and Mt Sinai made the decision to ban labor support people from the delivery room, that included both partners and doulas. With this new order, birthing people will not have to endure labor alone.

Thank you for listening to your constituents and protecting the safety and experience of childbirth in NY hospitals by allowing partners to be present for hospital births.

Hospitals need more Personal Protective Equipment for their staff so they remain safe. All hospitals have a screening protocol in place for anyone entering and that goes for the the L&D unit as well. There are strict rules in place that must be followed to protect everyone on the unit. We are thankful to everyone working in our healthcare system and pray for their continued safety while they serve on the front lines.

This past week as a response to the swell of Covid19 cases NY Presbyterian Hospitals decided to revoke the right to labor support during birth. This means that their patients would not even have the support of their partners. Other private and city hospitals have restricted support to one person, so doulas have been pushed out of the birth process.
_
We are not meant to birth alone. Taking away a birthing mother’s right to the support person of her choosing is inhumane, it’s obstetric violence, it’s family separation & it isn’t safe. The consequences of separating a birthing mother & her support system are catastrophic. Care giving isn’t valued economically in the USA. There aren’t protections for care givers. We don’t have infrastructure in place to make sure that doulas aren’t seen as “visitors” but are acknowledged & respected as essential members of the birth team. Doulas provide non-clinical support that is unmatched by clinical providers & the research shows that fewer interventions, lower c-sections, increased maternal satisfaction, breastfeeding success, healthy birth outcomes, decreased mood disorders & depression are all correlated with doula support.

We need to protect the birth village and pivot in this time of crisis. We need to educate folks in how to advocate effectively for themselves. We need clients to fully understand their rights & informed consent in action. We need to protect the patient advocacy safety net. We need vigilance. In a system that has repeatedly failed black & brown women, this policy of separation will not only traumatize everyone, including communities of color, but can be potentially deadly. If there is no one there to witness, protect, & advocate.. who’s on your side? More institutions are banning support.

Mama Glow: INFORMED CONSENT: the legal doctrine requires that medical practitioners to provide a patient with all relevant information about a proposed procedure or treatment prior to obtaining the consent of the patient to carry out the procedure or treatment.
_
The following are your legal rights in terms of giving or refusing consent to health care procedures:

1. The right to give consent or refuse consent on any grounds, including moral or religious grounds, even if the refusal will result in death;
_
2. The right to select a particular form of medically appropriate health care on any grounds, including moral or religious grounds;
_
3. The right to revoke consent;
_
4. The right to expect that a decision to give, refuse, or revoke consent will be respected;
_
5. The right to be involved to the greatest degree possible in all case planning and decision making.
_
Four items of information must be provided to have informed consent:
1. Nature of procedure
2. Risks
3. Benefits
4. Availability of an alternative treatment (including no treatment) and the risks and benefits thereof
_
IMPORTANT NOTES ON CONSENT
_
Although consent can be implied by cooperation movements such as opening your legs for a cervical exam, cooperation should not be confused with consent. If you have not been provided with information about a health care treatment, behavior cannot be assumed to imply consent.
_
Except for under very specific circumstances, no one is allowed to give or revoke consent on your behalf. This includes the partner, family members, doula or health care provider.
_
Ask for numbers. If midwife or doctor explains, for example, that a treatment increases your risk of a poor birth outcome, ask by how much.
_
Whenever possible, ALWAYS take time to reflect on your options before making a decision. Ask to be left alone to discuss and weigh the options.
_
The birth team can help advocate and ask questions about proposed treatments so you have as much information as you’d need to make an informed choice about your care.

Pregnancy and new motherhood is an opportunity to address any superficial neuroses we have about our bodies. We are constantly hearing through cultural messaging that we are not enough. We reaffirm that messaging every day when we roll our eyes at the circumference of our thighs and suck in our bellies, and attack ourselves with hateful language about our beautiful bodies. Life changes our bodies. Motherhood changes our bodies.
_
Feeling secure and confident in your body is an ongoing process. We are all working on exploring healing in our lives. To really operate from a place of total glow power each of us must learn to embody our divinity, the goddess within. To know that these bodies we live in transform to create life. To know that we can evolve our relationship with our bodies. Many of us may carry trauma that lives in our tissues and as we learn to love our bodies, we begin to heal those wounds be they wounds that we acquired in our lives or wounds we inherited from our ancestors. Harness that inner power. It’s your responsibility.
_
Take out your journal for some writing. Go deep within and answer the following questions:
_
• What cultural legacy was I born into, and what are its views about women?
_
• How have I shamed my body in the past?
_
• What empowering language can I use to describe my body parts?
_
• In what ways have I grown more comfortable with my body?

Now take a few minutes and write a poem to your belly, thighs, hips, breasts or whatever body part needs your tenderness the most. Title it: ODE TO MY.... _
Here are some affirmations for self-love:
• Today, I honor my body. I love myself, and I treat myself with respect.
_
• I listen only to my own inner wisdom and let it guide my every thought and action.
_
• Today I celebrate my belly, hips, breasts and thighs as a reminder of my divine femininity and maternal power.
_

Were you encouraged to nurse your baby? Did you experience difficulty? Did you have breastfeeding role models? When did you end your nursing journey?

What is your breastfeeding story? What do you know about how you were fed as a baby? Were you breastfed, if so, for how long? How does your mother speak about her experience feeding you? Was she supported in breastfeeding? If you didn’t grow up with a mother or your biological one, who was it that held you and fed you and imprinted you with a sense of safety? Who gave you that primal love?

We know that breastfeeding provides more than just milk, it’s liquid love, the closeness facilitates bonding and there are many who have experienced this connection and it’s impacted them so deeply. Breastfeeding and our breastfeeding stories are part of who we are. Sharing your story in a safe space can facilitate healing for those who have had challenges with nursing, sharing your triumphant stories can provide inspiration for those who are new along the path of breastfeeding. Asking about how you were fed can give you insight and inspiration to adopt some of the ways or change the course going forward.
