Mama Glow Webinar – Celebrating Black Maternal Health Week: Addressing Birth Worker Burnout

This year’s theme for Black Maternal Health Week is “Our Bodies Belong to Us: Restoring Black Autonomy and Joy!”

In celebration of Black Maternal Health week we are addressing the health and wellbeing of our care workers that serve along the reproductive health continuum. The pandemic led the nation’s healthcare workers to a breaking point where birth workers of all backgrounds are experiencing burnout, psychological distress, and anxiety. As we envision and design a future that centers safety, dignity and joy for Black birthing people, we must also work to support our health care workers who are on the frontlines, ensuring they have tools to thrive and provide optimal care.

The World Health Organization (WHO) designated 2020 as the “Year of the Nurse and the Midwife” in honor of the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. The world needs nine million more nurses and midwives to achieve universal health coverage by 2030.

With the growing maternal health crisis in the USA, midwives, particularly those of color, are desperately needed on the frontlines to help provide culturally competent care for their clients. We need to decolonize the maternity space and center our ancestral birth practices. We are joined by a distinguished and diverse group of midwives to talk about the importance of this moment.

Say Her Name: Black Maternal Mortality & Honoring Mothers Lost

This month we celebrate mothers and we  acknowledge and honor the lives of mothers we have lost as a result of childbirth or childbirth related causes. Black women and Native women are 4 to 5 times more likely than white women to die during childbirth or due to childbirth related causes. What does this this mean for the families that are left behind when lives are lost? How does one heal after tragedy hits and how does one spring into action to seek justice? Join two fathers who have been directly impacted by this issue. Charles Johnson, the founder of 4Kira4Moms who became an advocate for birthing people when he tragically lost his wife Kira Johnson after a routine C-section in California. Charles will be joined by Bruce McIntyre, partner of Amber Isaac, a Bronx woman who tweeted about medical neglect and lost her life days later during childbirth. Both Kira and Amber’s stories have sparked rage, sorrow, fear and action.

Birth Equity: A Spotlight on Systemic Disparities & Black Maternal Health

Black Maternal Health Week

COVID-19 has exposed the fragility of our medical system. We know that maternal mortality and morbidity disproportionately affects black women and during this time, with rapidly changing policies and lack of support, we know that there are gaps that will leave black mothers exposed and can potentially exacerbate their health risk. In this informative webinar with Joia Crear-Perry, MD, Founder and President of the National Birth Equity Collaborative, we will explore the health disparities that black women face, unpack the policy gaps and we will frame what birth equity really means. We will look at the structural obstacles and the work being done to challenge the system and make it safe for all of us. We want to move away from fear and step into self-determination. We want people to feel empowered to take action and advocate for themselves and take steps toward a more equitable future.

This is about supporting before, during and after birth and protecting the birth village. We will also explore virtual support and techniques to pivot during this time. This is a webinar for birthing people and folks who provide support as doulas, partners and others who want to help amplify this issue.
