Add These Products to Your Shelf For Breastfeeding Awareness Month

Bintou Diarra, A.B | Medical Anthropology, Brown University | August 15, 2023

August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month. As we work to heighten public awareness and support for breastfeeding, we want to highlight products from companies working to support birthing people and babies in their quest for the gold standard of nutrition. Here’s our list of top breastfeeding support products that can assist you through Breastfeeding Awareness Month and beyond.

Mila’s Keeper: The MilKeeper® — $46 USD

Proper storage and preparation are necessities in your breastfeeding journey, and Mila’s Keeper founder Lara Vu creates products with this in mind. The MilKeeper® is a patented, insulated breast milk cooler that keeps milk safe for 20 hours with its custom fit “colder than ice” cold packs. And while it is marketed as a cooler, it has a multitude of functions that allow for optimal incorporation at any point of the journey. It is intentionally designed as a reusable water bottle, which allows new parents to use it once the breastfeeding journey ends, and it can be used on-the-go as a milk warmer. It is currently available in four modern colorways of Pink Sands, Panama Palms, Aspen White, and Starry Night. Read more about The MilKeeper® and purchase  here.

Founded by mother of two Lara Vu, a former UNICEF worker and certified lactation educator who experienced breastfeeding challenges both personally and professionally. As a California Benefit company, Mila’s Keeper donates 5% of each purchase to a nonprofit organization that supports female empowerment and environmental protection.

Fourth Phase: The Mylk Box — $70 USD

While nursing is natural, it is certainly not intuitive. There exists a wide range of potential issues—from delayed or insufficient milk production, to flat or inverted nipples. These complications can be particularly distressing for parents that are new to nursing. Black women-led postnatal care brand Fourth Phase launched its first-ever lactation box—the Mylk Box—to introduce an air of ease during this critical period of the postpartum journey. It contains four essential products to assist birthing people in what founders Nana Eyeson-Akiwowo and Marcia Cole call the Fourth Trimester, which covers the first 12 weeks following childbirth.

The Mylk Box is among Fourth Phase’s latest gifts to nursing parents. Within each box, you can find four products that promote comfort and wellness during the nursing period. Their MylkBlend, a tea made with Fenugreek leaves, promotes lactation and relaxation. The box also contains their Flaxpack, a lavender and flaxseed hot and cold compress; a Rose Quartz GuaSha stone for breast massages and the release of milk engorgement; and CocoNip, a coconut oil-based salve to heal dry, cracked nipples. Read more about The Mylk Box here.

Their organic, gluten-free, and vegan ingredients offer breastfeeders an all-natural way to produce enough of their own breast milk, using plant-based assistance. Made of caffeine-free loose-leaf herbs, this formula contains four organic ingredients–Organic Fenugreek leaves, Organic Rooibos Leaves, Organic Ginger Root, and Organic Cloves.

Elvie Pump — $ 549.99 USD

As caloric needs continue to increase in the time after childbirth, new parents may have to find new modes of honoring their breastfeeding goals, all while getting to their increasingly busy lives. With the Elvie Pump, pumping on-the-go is feasible. Tucking discretely in the user’s bra, the Elvie Pump enables breastfeeding parents to, in their own words, “roam where other motherpumpers dare not go”. It has an all-in-one, hands-free design with no external cords or tubes. Customizable for changing feed, the Elvie Pump allows users to choose between four pumping rhythms to optimize milk output and manage common concomitants of breastfeeding, like sensitive nipples and heavier letdown. Read more about the Elvie Pump and purchase here.

When it comes to comfortable, efficient expression, a good fit makes all the difference. Made of a soft-silicone that’s gentle on skin, Elvie Nipple Cushions slip inside your Breast Shields to enhance your fit.

Frida Mom’s 2-in 1 Lactation Massager — $35.99 USD

While breastfeeding is natural, it is certainly not intuitive. It comes with a slew of barriers that can make it difficult. Luckily, these barriers are not insurmountable. Frida Mom’s 2-in1 Lactation Massager has adjustable modes that allow you to break up what they call the “milk traffic jam” to get you to the let-down faster and easier. The different sides and ends help with unclogging stubborn ducts, pulling out blocked milk, and emptying breasts. It is pocket-sized and rechargeable, which diminishes the need for batteries, and it is water-resistant, which allows for massages in the shower. Read more about the 2-in-1 Lactation Massager and purchase here

The 2-in-1 Lactation Massager gently brings warmth and vibrations to break up milk buildup, so you can get to the let-down faster and easier. Choose from various modes to relieve clogged ducts and engorgement when nursing or pumping.

The Milk Moon: The Milky Way — $28.00 USD

Many new parents struggle to increase their milk supply. The Milky Way is the perfect solution for those worried about their infants receiving enough milk. The double-duty formula combines galactagogues, which boost milk production, with nervines, which relax both the infant and the baby. Produced from organically-grown herbs, including a mixture of Alfalfa & Blessed thistle, Shatavari root, and Fennel and Chamomile, the Milky Way is tasty and soothing for new moms and infants. Read more about the Milky Way and purchase here.

This double-duty formula combines milk boosting galactagogues with calming nervines to relax both breastfeeder and baby. Perfect for late afternoon and evening when milk supply is lower and baby is fussy.
