Frequently Asked Questions

A doula is a trained non-clinical professional who provides physical, emotional, informational, and advocacy support to individuals before, during, and after childbirth. Unlike midwives, or physicians, doulas do not provide medical care but focus on supporting the birthing person through the labor and delivery process. A doula is a member of the care team.

During labor, a doula offers continuous emotional support, comfort measures (like massage, counter pressure, movement, or breathing techniques), and helps the birthing person and their partner navigate the labor process. They also provide education and information about the stages of labor and various options for pain relief and help clients navigate their choices during childbirth.

Research shows that having a doula can lead to a more positive birth experience, a reduction in interventions such as induction, cesarean sections, and a shorter labor. The presence of a doula can increase breastfeeding success and improve overall maternal satisfaction with the birth experience.

A doula and a midwife serve different roles. A midwife provides clinical care and manages the birth process, whereas a doula offers non-clinical support and advocacy. Doulas and midwives work together in hospitals, birth centers and in homebirth settings. Many people choose to hire a doula to work alongside their midwife for comprehensive support.

Yes, doulas can support births in various settings, including hospitals, birthing centers, and home births. They adapt their support to the specific environment and preferences of the birthing person.

A birth doula provides support to clients leading up to labor and delivery, while a postpartum doula helps with the transition to parenthood after the baby is born. Postpartum doulas assist with newborn care, breastfeeding support, and postpartum recovery while new parents adjust to life after birth.

When selecting a doula, consider factors such as their training and certification, their experience, and whether their approach aligns with your birth preferences. It’s also important to interview with them beforehand to ensure you feel comfortable and supported by their presence before you make a decision. Doula support is very intimate. Trust your gut when selecting your doula.

Coverage for doula services varies by insurance plan. Some plans may cover part or all of the cost, while others may not. Check with your insurance provider to learn more about your specific coverage and any potential reimbursement options.

Whether you can use Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) or Health Savings Accounts (HSA) to pay for doula services depends on the specific rules of your plan and the type of services provided. FSAs and HSAs can cover medical expenses that are considered necessary for medical care. To use FSA or HSA funds, you will need a receipt from the doula and, in some cases, a letter of medical necessity from a healthcare provider. Keep detailed records of payments and services provided. You may need to submit this information along with a letter of medical necessity if required by your plan. Always check with your FSA or HSA administrator for specific requirements.

If you are looking to book a Mama Glow Doula, you are in the right place. Through our bespoke doula matching service, we provide you with a hand selected choice of doulas to work with based on your desires, needs, preferences and location. To get started choose your journey and complete the form and a client coordinator will contact you.

During a consultation, you can expect to discuss your birth preferences, the doula’s experience and approach, and any questions or concerns you may have. This is also an opportunity to gauge if the doula’s support style aligns with your needs and goals. Your doula will discuss your birth plan and preferences, their role, and maintain open communication. Your doula can provide the support you need and help create a positive birth experience.

If you have a medical question or concern, please contact your provider immediately. While doulas can provide evidence-based information to help you make informed choices about your care, doulas are not clinical professionals and providing medical advice or addressing medical concerns falls outside of the scope of practice.
