Every mom needs some time away from the daily grind. When we take even a few hours for ourselves it makes a huge difference in our parenting, productivity, and improves our sense of self- leaving us refreshed and ready to meet the tasks and duties that await us with a smile. As a multitasking mompreneur I often take glow time retreats in NYC if I don’t have the time to jump on a plane for three hours to hit the beach in Tulum, Mexico or Miami.

I took a glow time getaway at the Chatwal Hotel with my dear friend Elaine Welteroth, health and beauty editor of Teen Vogue. We’d been talking about taking a trip for sometime and both of us were swamped with work so we made a girlfriend’s date. We had a special afternoon of pampering awaiting us- in room treatments including: manicures, toe nail polish change, and reflexology. The weather was particularly warm and I decided to walk over to the hotel from Times Square- bad idea. Battling the boisterous pedestrians tourists gazing up at the flashing lights in the sky, while walking in groups and snapping pictures proved challenging, and it took me 10 minutes to walk nearly two blocks- the New Yorker in me just wanted to hurry and arrive on site.

Once I approached the doors of the luxury boutique hotel the doorman greeted me with a smile and warm welcome. As the door swung open I was immediately transported. The lobby adorned with rich Art Deco details and mood lighting set the tone for a 5-Star experience that would follow. Thierry Despont, the architect extraordinaire behind the Getty Center, The Carlyle, Chopard, and Ralph Lauren, is responsible for the detailed  restoration of this Manhattan landmark. The Who’s Who of entertainment, fashion, and media dine in the hotel’s famed restaurant- The Lamb’s Club. After our speedy check  in, the Red Door spa director was informed of our arrival and rather than us dropping our bags to the room and heading to the spa for treatments- the spa came to us!

Elaine and I arrived at my room where there was a bottle of champagne on ice, two flutes, and a handwritten note regarding our stay. A basket of fruit- which was perfect for us healthy gals was on the coffee table and our mini bar filled with healthy snacks as well as decadent chocolates and an extensive bar set up.

The room was a rich mahogany with paneling and and piping details. The bed was firm to perfection and the pillows incredibly soft. The rooms seemed sound proof however darker than outside even with the curtains drawn open. The bathroom- was equipped with a Japanese style electronic toilet with a seat warmer, bidet, and warm air drying function. The shower pressure was perfect and a bath in the oversized tub was certainly in order.

There was sudden knock at the door, two practitioners in Red Door Spa jumpers  entered the room and set up a station in the living area where they could lavish us with their signature in room with manicures that start at $45 and reflexology treatments starting at $85 for 25 minutes- involving application of pressure to the feet and hands with specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques without the use of oil or lotion. For expectant mamas, they even offer prenatal massage starting at $150 for 50 minutes. The reflexology sessions lasted about 45 minutes and had Elaine and I so deeply relaxed that we canceled our concert plans and opted to stay in and order room service and relax for the evening.

If you aren’t keen on in room services you can head down to the spa for total rejuvenation. The Red Door Spa features three treatment rooms, three private changing suites with steam showers, a relaxation lounge featuring spa aperitifs, a manicure and a pedicure studio, saltwater lap pool, Jacuzzi plunge pool, and a fitness center as well.

It was dinner time after all of that relaxation- we needed a bite to eat. I of course ordered a vegan beet salad with all the trimmings.

I felt completely relaxed and soon would get ready for bed and have really sound sleep. I woke up bright and early- Elaine had to report to work at Teen Vogue and I had to head down to the Mama Glow office but we made sure to test out the bed for bounciness- one of the key criteria for a plush hotel room according to my son Fulano- a professional at bed bouncing.

We were assigned a lovely butler who came to the room to help us organize our things to depart. All in all it was a great Glow Time Getaway and I felt recharged and ready to conquer my next work feat. Whether you’re looking to book a baby moon, a weekend with the girls, or just need a simple glow time getaway by yourself I recommend the Chatwal Hotel.
