AstroTwins talk Momstrology: A Guide to Parenting by the Stars!
Tell us about your book, Momstrology: The AstroTwins’ Guide to Parenting Your Little One By the Stars.
Momstrology is an astrological encyclopedia of the mothers and kids of every sign. It’s divided into four sections:
• Astrology Basics — We explain a few astrology fundamentals. There are also Dadscopes that reveal each sign’s father style, a Cosmic Caregivers Guide showing which babysitter temperament is best for your child, and even a conception calendar to help you predict (or plan!) your baby’s sign.
• Kid Signs — in-depth information about temperament, discipline, peer interaction, best educational style, hobbies, sibling interactions and so much more about the child of each astrological sign
• Mom Signs — detailed breakdowns of what every zodiac sign is like as a mother. Chapters follow each mom through her child’s ages and stages, from birth to age 18.
• Mom-Child Matchers — Where do you click and where do you clash? Our matchers explain every possible combination of mother and child.
What inspired you to write this book?
Well, life! Ophira is the mom of a three-year-old Libra girl named Cybele, and stepmom to Leo Clementine, 14. As a mom and an aunt to two girls, we found ourselves referencing astrology to understand what they were going through. It explained why, for example, our showy Leo has her own YouTube channel, or why our balance-seeking little Libra fashionista insists on organizing her sparkly shoes and tutus all perfectly.
Many of our astrology clients are also mothers. They ask about their children and how to deal with the dynamics between them. They worry about whether they’ve done a good enough job raising them. They blame themselves for what’s gone wrong, but seldom take credit for what they’ve done right. The world is hard on mothers, so Momstrology is our tribute to them. Instead of fueling the Mommy Wars, we’re helping moms realize what they’ve done right. Yes, we lovingly point out what might be a weakness or an area to work on, but in a constructive way, like a life coach or a supportive friend would.
What makes Momstrology different from other parenting books?
Many parenting guides have a one-size-fits-all philosophy. As astrologers, we know that people are so different, and those differences are apparent in children often from Day One. So we’re excited that Momstrology captures the vastly different approaches to child-rearing the kids of each sign. Momstrology is kind of the book we wish we’d had. As a mom, Ophira has found a lot of useful books on parenting philosophies, but most tend to argue that there’s a single “right” way to raise a child. In reality, that doesn’t usually happen. For example, maybe the “cry it out” Ferber method works for your autonomous Aries, but traumatizes your clingy Cancer. Or what works for a security-seeking Taurus child, for instance, might not fly with a free-spirited Sagittarius.
Wow, so true! So, who is this book for?
We like to say it’s for “mystical moms and divine dads,” but really, it’s for anyone who’s curious about astrology and wants some extra tools and support. If you want to understand yourself as a mother, feel validated for struggling with certain things, recognize your strengths and even understand your own mom, this book is for you. If you’re unsure of what kind of discipline, attention and support to give your child, Momstrology can help you tailor your parenting in the way that’s best for your child’s sign. This is especially useful in families that have more than one kid. What worked for the oldest may be completely wrong for the next child, depending on their signs.
Have you always been astrologers?
Not at all! This was an accidental career that began as a hobby in the early 1990s while we were studying art at The University of Michigan. We are entirely self- taught, by a few good books and a lot of obsession! Our formal background is in publishing, journalism and design. In college, we founded a multicultural women’s magazine called HUES, then went on to work for Ms. magazine, which gave us a strong background in women’s issues. Ophira’s first book was a body image anthology called Body Outlaws, and she is the founder of an acclaimed 15- year-old website called AdiosBarbie.com.
So while our Sagittarian nature gives us an intellectual side and a love of social justice, we also adore pop culture and are shameless media junkies. In fact, our clients range from PhDs and world leaders to reality TV stars and pop singers.
Astrology is a fun way to bridge the two worlds, giving people advice and introducing them to many of the concepts we’ve learned in academia as well as through a decade of doing every personal growth workshop on the planet.
Did you discover anything interesting while writing this book?
Definitely! One thing we noticed was that certain astrological signs are better at parenting babies (like Cancer and Virgo), while others struggle with the infant stage but thrive during early childhood (Sagittarius) and even the teenage years (Aquarius). In Momstrology, we address this. Every mom has a “sweet spot,” which should come as a relief to readers, since mothers are under so much pressure to be perfect and saintly, never admitting that there are parts of parenthood that aren’t so fun or easy!
How is this book helpful to moms or mothers-to-be?
Becoming a mom, especially for the first time, can bring so much uncertainty. You’re terrified that you’re going to mess it up and ruin your child’s life. You don’t know how the heck you ended up being responsible for another human being or how you’ll handle it. You want answers, guidance, an instruction manual—and that’s where Momstrology comes in. We even joked that the subtitle of the book should be How Not to Screw Your Kids Up, By the Stars.)
Is there value in this book for non-parents, too?
Sure! For starters, even if you’re not a mom, you have a mother—and let’s face it, the mother-child dynamic can get really complex! Momstrology can help you understand your own mother better, and why you may not see eye-to-eye on certain things.
It does take a village to raise a child, so the aunts, uncles, caregivers and adults who are a regular part of children’s lives can learn a lot from the book, too. And it makes a great baby shower gift for friends who are expecting.
You also have a companion website, Momstrology.com. What can visitors find there?
We know that moms can’t possibly get enough helpful information, so our website serves as a “spiritual toolbox” for people who want to parent consciously and with a little help from the universe! Building out our site gives us a chance to tackle deeper issues and expand beyond sun sign astrology into numerology, moon and rising signs, flower essences, yoga poses for kids, pet horoscopes, mother-in-law matchers and rituals that parents can do with our children.
We range from high to low: we’ll analyze celebrity parents or the charts of famous people’s newborn babies. Then we also address parenting issues based on the “theme” of the sun sign every month. For example, Pisces rules art and healing, so we have a piece by a mom who used art to help her son communicate when he struggled with a speech delay. Then, we offered resources for how to introduce art to the child of each zodiac sign.
